As the Trump administration continues its attack on migrants, US unions are mobilizing to defend migrant workers and calling for “an end to the brutal ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids terrorizing our communities.”
- On July 1, IUF-affiliate SEIU will launch its #SolidaritySummer campaign which aims to mobilize working people from across the United States on a “Justice Journey” sending a clear message that the union rejects “the Trump Administration’s unrelenting attacks on our immigrant communities”
- The Justice Journey, based on the tactics used by the US Civil Rights movement, will travel through cities that have already suffered from violent ICE raids, military forces in the streets, and citizens arrested for exercising their right to free speech. On June 6, SEIU United Service Workers West President David Huerta was assaulted and detained while acting as a community observer during an ICE raid in Los Angeles. He has been charged with conspiring to impede an officer and released after three days on a $50,000 bond
- At the IUF Executive Committee (May 21 -22, 2025) a resolution was adopted condemning the escalating attacks on the rights of workers and their unions and calling for the Secretariat and affiliates to provide support to United States affiliates “in the fight back against the ongoing attacks on democratic and trade union rights in the United States”
- In an analysis of the Trump Administration’s immigration and refugee policies, Human Rights Watch’s Bill Frelick, Director of their Refugee and Migrant Rights Division, points out that these policies “obliterate programs built over decades to enable avenues to safety for people fleeing war and persecution”, warning that while the impact is felt directly by the asylum seekers, migrants, refugees, their families and communities their effect will be “far-reaching as the US sets an example that is likely to cause other countries to turn their backs on people fleeing for their lives”
- The IUF website will be carrying updates on US affiliates’ actions to defend democracy, human and workers rights
Support the SEIU action on July 1 by posting solidarity messages to #SolidaritySummer.
