IUF’s Italian affiliates, Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL, and Uiltucs UIL have called a strike for today, May 7 to protest McDonald’s refusal to negotiate a national company agreement.

  • A protest action, a flash mob, to support the strike will be held at the Rimini Conference Center where McDonald’s Development Italy will be holding its annual convention. It will be attended by 170 franchisees of the brand operating in Italy.
  • A national collective labour agreement for the catering sector was signed on June 5, 2024. Normally, it would be supported by group-level supplementary agreements but, unlike other restaurant chains, McDonald’s has refused to negotiate the supplementary agreement.
  • The McDonald’s Company has 4,000 employees, plus there are 31,000 workers employed in franchised outlets. The McDonald’s brand is the largest employer in the commercial catering sector in Italy.
  • The IUF and EFFAT-IUF Europe are mobilizing support for the strike action including solidarity message and social media posts.
  • The IUF and its affiliates are engaged in long-running battle with McDonald’s to ensure trade union rights and to call out the company’s failure to deal with the sexual harassment that is endemic in the sector.
"The mobilization will continue until McDonald’s recognizes the dignity and respect that its employees deserve.”
