The IUF has signed a Joint Memorandum of Understanding on union rights and recognition with Arla Foods. Arla, headquartered in Denmark, is a transnational dairy company which is expanding its business globally, particularly in Africa and the Near East.
In the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the company recognizes the IUF as the internationally representative body of unionized workers within Arla Foods. It builds on the earlier agreement with Arla on zero tolerance of sexual harassment.
- The company employs globally around 20,000 people and has a portfolio of 24 brands, including top sellers like Dano, Lurpak Puck and Yoggi.
- The MoU, which guarantees a worksite visit every year as part of one of the regular biannual meetings, will also ensure that the IUF can raise focus on sustainable employment, occupational safety and health, forced labour, sexual harassment and gender equality and tackling the climate crisis.
- It commits Arla “to promote and protect human rights in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, its obligations under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct and the European Union Directive on corporate sustainability due diligence.”
- It lays down the process for the engagement including “to continue the meetings between senior Arla Foods labour relations management and representatives of the IUF and its affiliates to maintain a constructive ongoing dialogue on relevant labour topics including issues related to human rights within Arla Foods operations, its business relationships and throughout the company supply chain.”
