Taking away the rights to unionize and collectively bargain from over 1 million workers across the United States Federal Government is nothing short of explicit union busting and a vindictive retaliatory act by President Trump against a dedicated and committed workforce, the Council of Global Unions said in a statement earlier this week.

This assault on workers’ rights is just the latest in a series of attacks by President Trump and an unelected billionaire who seek to not only destroy the United States labour movement but attack workers’ rights around the world. In his first two months in office, Trump has already fired the acting chair of the United States National Labor Relations Board, leaving it without a quorum to penalize employers that violate the law when fighting against unionization.

“The return of a Trump administration in the United States is a major threat to trade unions and workers’ rights,” said Kristjan Bragason, Acting General Secretary of the IUF. The IUF is a member of the Council of Global Unions, which represents over 200 million workers worldwide through the International Trade Union Confederation, the Global Union Federations, and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD.

The Global Unions statement also warned against the consequences of eliminated funding for the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs, which has worked to ensure safe workplaces and protection for human rights across global supply chains. Such cuts, “a gift to dictators and billionaire elites,” would harm the most vulnerable workers globally, the statement has predicted.

Global unions pledged to fight the actions of the Trump administration and all attacks on working people and their unions.

“We must stand in solidarity with workers and our affiliates in the United States. This is a fight we cannot afford to lose,” said Bragason.
